At Endeavour Academy we aim to offer a high-quality science education which will open the door to your understanding of the world. We want our scientific learning to be interesting, meaningful, and motivating. Throughout history, science has changed our lives and is vital for our world’s future. We want everyone at our school to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world we live in and learn to think about important questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? How does life exist? Why do things grow?

At Endeavour you will be encouraged to deepen your scientific thinking to open up to new ideas and new ways of thinking in order to resolve problems. Through our science curriculum we want you to learn how to work together to investigate, test hypotheses, interpret data, and draw conclusions.

Your child’s science journey begins in Foundation Stage where they are introduced to the subject through activities that encourage them to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, make decisions and talk about the world around them. We aim to instil a sense of wonder at this early age and embed scientific learning in all areas of the curriculum.

Our main focus in Key Stage 1 is to encourage your child to experience and look more closely at the natural and human made world around them through practical experiences. Your child will begin to understand and use more scientific vocabulary to explain their ideas. There is a big emphasis on asking questions and finding out the answers through the five different types of enquiry to i.e. observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative tests, and finding information using secondary sources of information. As part of working scientifically your child will use simple measurements and equipment e.g. hand lenses, egg timers etc. to carry out simple tests, gather data and then talk about what they have found out.

In Lower Key Stage 2 your child will continue to work scientifically but will now take a larger role in making their own decisions in what to test and how to test during scientific investigations. They will draw simple conclusions and use a greater level of scientific vocabulary to discuss and then write about what they have found out. With support, they will ask new questions when they look at the data, and make new predictions.

In Upper Key Stage 2 your child will deepen their understanding of working scientifically. They will do this through exploring and talking about their ideas; asking their own questions about scientific phenomena and analysing relationships and interactions more systematically. At this part of your child’s science journey they will encounter more abstract ideas and begin to recognise how these ideas help them to understand and predict how the world operates. We will encourage your child to use evidence to justify their ideas, and decide how to record their data from a choice of approaches.

Science is a subject which is fascinating to children and comes naturally to them and complements their inquisitive natures. At Endeavour Academy we want to give your child the confidence to ask questions and the knowledge and skills to find the answers. Science opens the door to a world of opportunities and we are excited for your child to take these first steps with us at Endeavour Academy.
